If you’ve just moved home and are not too sure what the insulation is like, you may want to read this. There are some great free offers around at the moment from household energy suppliers such as British Gas, EON, EDF and also Tesco’s. Each offer comes with its own terms and conditions but essentially, a large percentage of home owners and private tenants in the UK have the opportunity to have their loft insulated, or their cavity walls filled or both, completely free of charge. Loft insulation could save you up to £175 each year on your energy bill and cavity wall insulation could save you an additional £135 each year, so definitely worth looking into. Here are some of the conditions that apply to most of the offers. Cavity Wall If you have solid walls, insulation is not an option Your walls haven’t already been filled If your home is metal framed, pre-fabricated or made from concrete, natural stone or timber, cavity insulation isn’t possible The offers don’t apply to council tenants or if you live in a housing association property Your home must be damp free Loft You must have a pitched roof. An adult must be able to move freely in the loft The loft has no insulation or less than 60mm of insulation You loft must be cleared before insulation can be installed Here is a list of the best deals around and the specific terms attached to them. Free cavity wall and loft insulation with EDF EDF currently have an ongoing offer for around 200,000 homes where you can get free cavity wall and loft insulation and you don’t even have to be a customer of theirs. This offer is not available in Northern Ireland, some Scottish areas and the Isles. You won’t be eligible for free insulation if EDF are unable to insulate at least two thirds of the total loft surface or wall cavities. Visit EDF to check suitability. If you qualify you can apply online of call 0800 015 7785 Free cavity wall or loft insulation for existing British Gas customers The deadline for the British Gas offer is 31st July 2012, with installation before 31st December 2012. The offer applies to all existing British Gas customers or those over 70 or on benefits. Free insulation is subject to limits on coverage depending on the type of property you live in. Insulation installations that require insulation beyond these limits can still be carried out, but will incur an additional charge. You will only qualify if British Gas can insulate a minimum of two thirds of the available loft space (when applied to the whole loft surface area) or available cavity wall space (when applied to the whole house). For loft insulation the offer only applies where the thickness of existing insulation is less than 60mm. Not all homes are suitable for loft and/or cavity wall insulation. The offer excludes the cost of scaffolding, vents and any specialist equipment that may be required. Check your suitability on the British Gas website, then call 0800 980 8177. Free cavity wall & loft insulation Plus a possible £100 cash with EON EON’s offer is ongoing with no current deadline.
